Domestic Violence Services

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior intended to gain or maintain power and control over another person (e.g. spouse, partner, girlfriend, boyfriend, family or household member.) The information contained here is intended to provide basic information about domestic violence and how victims of domestic violence can find help. 

When one person maintains power and control over another person, that is abuse. Abusive behaviors of power and control intended to keep survivors in a relationship may include:

  • Using coercion and threats
  • Using economic abuse
  • Using male privilege
  • Using children
  • Using intimidation
  • Using emotional abuse
  • Using isolation
  • Minimizing, denying and blaming

If you are a victim of domestic violence

In an emergency:

  • Call the police by calling 911
  • Get yourself and your children to a safe place
  • Get medical attention if needed

Protection orders

In Washington State, there are several types of protection orders. Civil protection orders can be filed with your local District Court or the Superior Court Clerk's Office. The list below details types of orders and where you can petition for them.

District or Superior Court

  • Domestic Violence Protection Order 
  • Sexual Assault Protection Order
  • Stalking Protection Order
  • Anti-Harassment Protection Order

Superior Court

  • Family Law Restraining Order (Petitioned for as part of a parenting plan, legal separation or divorce)
  • Extreme Risk Protection Order (May be petitioned by concerned family members or Law Enforcement)
  • Vulnerable Adult Protection Orders (May be petitioned by concerned family members or APS)
  • Abused Child (Petitioned by DCYF)

Criminal No Contact Orders (Issued by a Criminal Court as part of a criminal case)-

  • Anti-Harassment No-Contact Order
  • DV No-Contact Order
