[ARCHIVED] Monroe Board & Blade Park Plaza Redevelopment Plan

skate park

As Lake Tye Park increasingly becomes a recreational landmark for Monroe and the entire Sky Valley, the Parks and Recreation Department investigates opportunities that will benefit our community and contribute to the development of Monroe’s destination brand while endeavoring to ensure that our City continues to showcase our region’s beauty by providing aesthetically pleasing recreational venues.

The Department was contacted last year by two individuals in our community, Todd Yingling and Aris Williams, with a vision to transform our existing skate park into a cutting edge, world-class skate park that would be utilized as a venue for exciting events and also present Monroe with a beautiful civic center-style plaza theme.

Department staff, the Park Board and City Council has been provided with drafts of potential designs that illustrate how a renovated skate park can rival the top-rated skate parks around the nation and the world. Such a plan will provide challenging features for skaters as well as an aesthetically pleasing plaza for public relaxation or for industrial park workers in need of a convenient place to unwind during a break or after a day’s work. The transformed park will require no new land use and will be a beautifully scenic compliment to the wake board park once it becomes operational.

This plan seeks to engage the community by the public process of incorporating it into the City’s Comprehensive Park Plan, set to be updated later this year, as well as seek the community’s help in funding the project through sponsorships, fundraising and volunteer labor.
