Domestic Violence Response Commitment
Domestic Violence Response Commitment
Domestic violence is a crime that differs from other crimes because of the intimate relationship between the victim and the accused. In recognition of the difference between domestic violence and other crimes, police shall provide victims with special assistance. The Monroe Police Department is very seriously concerned if someone with whom you live assaults you.

We will work to support you in the following manner:
  • Our officers will not prejudge you; and you will not be blamed for what happened.
  • The responding officer will make a complete official report of any incident you report that causes you fear.
  • We will provide you with information on local community services and a "victim rights statement" in your own language.
  • We will arrange transportation for you and your children if you need to go to a hospital or a safe place.
  • We will accompany you to prevent further violence should you need to get personal items and fear for your safety.
  • We will attempt to recontact you within 24 hours of an assault to answer your questions, explain the system and inquire about your safety.
  • Officers will make a physical arrest if there is probable cause to believe an assault with injuries was committed, treating your case the same as assaults between people who do not live together.
  • We will fully investigate your case and file charges with the prosecutor using the same investigative criteria as other types of cases.
  • Responding officers or detectives will photograph your injuries and gather other physical evidence identified.
  • If you ask for confidentiality, we will not release your relocation address.
